Intellectual Perseverance

Intellectual perseverance is the determination to stay on the path that has been thought out and reasoned to be the best one, despite the fact that others may think that another path is preferable.  It is also the ability to put in the required mental effort to endure to the end of that path, considering all the options, and looking at all the points of view.

One of the three parts of critical thinking is “believing the results of our reasoning” (Nosich, 2012). Nosich states that “If you have reasoned something out and come to a conclusion but find that you still don’t really believe it, that indicates the reasoning is probably not complete” (2012).  After reasoning something out completely there should be no resistance to accepting the new belief or behavior.  This understanding can provide the determination and grit to follow through with the decision.  Though others may suggest that the new belief or behavior is faulty,  though it may go counter to common belief or action, a person with intellectual perseverance will stay the course.  An individual with intellectual perseverance realizes that the new idea has been thoroughly considered from every perspective, every eventuality has been thought of, and there is no room for doubt that it is the right path to pursue.  He or she will not allow others to persuade him otherwise.

For example, a person that has converted to a new religion must have intellectual perseverance.  Throughout the conversion process the new convert needs to be confident that he or she has sufficiently reasoned through the decision.  He or she needs to arrive at the point that no doubt remains that the change is right.  There are sure to be family, friends, and others who do not agree with the decision, and give their reasons why the change should not be made.  A person with intellectual perseverance will not allow the opinions of others to interfere or affect the decision.

Intellectual perseverance is like a locomotive.  Once it has momentum and is moving down the track, its course is set and there is little that can be done to cause it to deviate or slow down.

As I continue my education I will need intellectual perseverance to be able to endure to the end!  There may be times that I feel like dropping out, giving up, or turning in less than acceptable work.  If I remember that the decision to further my education came after extensively weighing the cost and considering the options, I will be able to muster the strength to follow through to the end.

Intellectual perseverance is an essential leadership quality.  Leaders are frequently expected to make decisions that affect a group.  It is uncommon for the results of every decision to be accepted unanimously.  Once a decision has been made, a leader must be determined to see the results of the decision through to the end, and not allow differing opinions to weaken his or her stance on the decision.
