Course Reflections
I have felt that the MSLD 500 course has been of great value to me. Throughout the course I have felt that my ability and desire to think critically has improved dramatically. I have noticed that my thinking has been improved in many aspects; I consider differing points of view more, I ponder on the purpose, and I try to identify any assumptions that might be part of my thinking. The ability to critically think has the potential to make me a much better leader as I continue to practice and apply those skills.
I found the action research project that I performed was beneficial in many ways. McNiff (2002) says “Action research is a term which refers to a practical way of looking at your own work to
check that it is as you would like it to be.” I researched ways that I could be a more persuasive communicator in my various leadership roles. I began noticing improvements even before the project was complete! I hope that there will be similar projects in future courses in which I will be able to continue to refine and perfect my abilities. One of the big points that I took away from my action research project was that persuasiveness can be increased by using stories to create an emotional connection with the audience. I would really like to study ways that I can use storytelling better, and thus continue to improve my speaking ability.
I appreciate how the action research project was broken up into several modules. When we first discussed the project I felt overwhelmed at the prospect of having to do all of the activities. As we started learning about what action research is it really layed a good foundation to be able to do the project. The entire action research process was organized very well, each module building on the previous, and by the end of the eight week we had already completed the entire project!
I cannot identify any negative aspects of taking this course. Perhaps I could have improved my learning and the application of the principles if I was better able to organize my time. I also could have improved my learning if I had continually reviewed the principles and concepts of critical thinking throughout the course.
I feel that this course has laid a great foundation for further learning about organizational leadership!
